Shut up and Fight!

Now, it may be a bit rich for me to tell people to stop talking so much and get to work as I regularly blog about my experiences. However, I never miss one second of training to discuss anything outside the immediate drills or exercises we are working on.

If you’ve followed my blogs religiously, or even just read a couple, you will know that I try and be positive about all aspects of life and training. I believe someone’s personality and attitude should flow through both. As a general rule, it does.

Now, it may be a bit rich for me to tell people to stop talking so much and get to work as I regularly blog about my experiences. However, I never miss one second of training to discuss anything outside the immediate drills or exercises we are working on.

The thought behind my blog here is that Judo is unforgiving (so is life!) and I see it so often that people put so much effort into vocalising their Judo that they don’t focus on getting work done.

Some of the stuff I have heard that drives me nuts includes;

  • I should have been picked for that team
  • I threw him massive and they gave yuko, he clips me and they call ippon
  • I heard my opponent is injured
  • I heard my opponent will struggle to make weight
  • I can’t believe she won that comp, I would have won if I had entered
  • The ref has no idea
  • My opponent is watching so I’m going to practise throws I never do
  • I’m going to come late to weigh in so people think I’m not fighting

The reason I say ‘Shut Up and Fight’ is that all of those things are all involve things outside of your control. Judo is bloody hard. There are so many variables to do with size, grips, angles, techniques, scores, etc. Why the hell would you waste mental energy on trivial things that are out of your control?

Say you spend 10 minutes a session talking rubbish and you train six sessions a week.

Don’t you think that an hour of extra training would be more beneficial? The worst part is that this sort of stuff is often taken home and lingered on for ages.

You can only control one thing in Judo and it’s the exact same in life. YOURSELF! You are the master of your own destiny. You control what you do, how, when, why you do it as well as your emotions in relation to everything around you.

Over the years of training I’ve become very selective of the things I do and try not to hang onto too much emotional baggage.  I promise you it has helped me in every way possible.

Remember in the end, when you walk out on that mat it is just you against the other guy.

No amount of clever conversation is going to save you. You’d be well served to have that extra hour per week’s training under your belt too.

That is the attitude that makes winners !! It's all about you and how well you perform on the mat.

What happens now?

Now that the Olympics is done and dusted I’ve got to make some big decisions. I have refused to make any plans until the Olympics were done and now it’s time to shape my short, mid and long term future.

Progress – How the hell do you measure it?

Judo is one of the easiest sports to make you feel miserable when you are not winning, and the complexity of the sport can lead practitioners to feel like they are getting nowhere or even going backwards.
